We’re moving too slow. We took a long rest after we managed to escape those trolls, but it’s done nothing for Connor’s leg. He’s limping slower now than he was when he was first shot. Daniella did the best she could with what we had, but I think Connor needs real help. A doctor’s help. Something we don’t have.

This nightmare only increases my anxiety. If things are this bad out here, what will the city be like? What about my little brother and sister?

I promised I’d be there for them, but I stayed on campus with my friends. I stayed with Mya. And if she had asked, in that room, after giving me her necklace and saying how much she cared about me, I would have stayed even longer. I would have stayed for her.

That thought makes me burn with shame. That I would easily abandon my family for a woman. But it’s the truth. I’ve always had strong feelings for Mya, and I can’t really explain why. She’s just one of those girls. A magnet. And once I got too close, I was helpless against her pull.

Without thinking, I reach up and touch the necklace she gave me. Her goodbye gift. It’s a cross-shaped pendant and a ring fashioned as a thorny crown. Something about Jesus and His crown on the cross, when He was crucified. I don’t believe in God, but I do believe that Mya believes. She’s convinced God is real and her love for Him compelled her to give this to me.

No matter what I think of religion, I cannot deny how much this gift means. I cannot deny the proof of her emotion in this small gesture. God means a lot to her, so for her to share this piece of Him with me… well, it gives me the determination I need to keep going. Because I made a promise to my siblings that I would leave for them, but I made a promise to Mya that I would return for her.

Connor stumbles because I’ve stopped supporting him. He shifts slightly to the side, and I let go of the necklace to stable him again.

He waves a hand as he grunts. “I … I can’t—I need to stop.”

Daniella is on his other side; she heaves a sigh as she gingerly leans him against an abandoned car. We made it off the highway and decided to travel on the back roads the other day. It’s just the three of us now. The rest of the students from campus were shot down or escaped and never looked back. I don’t know if that’s better or worse.

“This isn’t good,” Daniella says, looking right at me. She’s been doing that lately, talking like Connor isn’t right there. It creeps me out. It makes me feel like he’s already dead in her eyes.

“What isn’t good?” I ask, trying to force her to acknowledge him.

She crosses her arms. “He’s moving too slow. And our supplies dwindle every day.”

She’s right. At this point, we’ll run out of food and water before we make it to the city.
